When imagination also fails!

There is a very good chance that you are sitting while you’re reading this post. Take a second to consider how much time of a day you spend sitting. Out of the 24 hours that you have, the majority of time is spent sitting. If you are at work, it’s a minimum of 8 to 10 hours (feel free to add to that whatever number you want if you are working for a Startup as I do ;))

You are sitting when you commute to work and God forbid if you should live in a place like New York, London or Mumbai your commute could easily take a good hour or two. You sit while you eat, you sit to poop (and yes, eat n poop in the same sentence is not the best idea). You sit and watch TV unless you are one of those people who recline every 15 minutes when watching television. To make a long story short, you spend a major chunk of your day sitting.

Now imagine for a second if you couldn’t sit at all. Not even for a minute! Every time you sit it’s as if a hundred needles are piercing your body. It hurts. Can’t wrap your head around it? Can you even imagine a life without sitting?

If you were not sitting while reading this blog you were definitely standing. Take a second to consider how much time of a day you spend standing; preparing a meal in the kitchen; brushing your teeth; taking a shower; at the bar; waiting in line to pick up an order; at a wedding; at a party….. and the list goes on and on and on.

Now imagine for a second if you could only stand for 15 to 20 minutes. Imagine there’s a timer and a bomb will tick off if you exceed that time limit. That bomb is the excruciating pain in the entire lower body, a pain and fatigue that leaves you so debilitated that you need to rest for at least one hour before you can even think of standing again.

Scratching your head? Are you wondering how it is even possible to carry out a normal day without having the luxury of being able to stand for more than 15 minutes at a stretch?

Well, chronic pain and fatigue caused by fibromyalgia make the impossible possible.

If you were not standing and not sitting either, then obviously, this time I’ve got to be right, you were lying down. You know the drill now. Imagine for a second that you cannot lie down straight on your back or even for that matter on your sides. The only option you have is to lie down on your stomach. You obviously would not be able to watch TV or read a book. Forget doing any other complicated activity, just imagine sleeping in one exact position for hours on end.

Now add another layer of complexity. Add 1 and 2 to 3. If you cannot sit even for a minute, cannot stand for more than 15 minutes at a stretch and cannot lie down on your back or on your sides… the only God damn thing you can do is to lie down on your stomach.

Now, this is a situation where your imagination will also fail even if you tried your best.
